Boot Camp Special Report: Re-sizing partition after Windows XP installation
Several users have inquired about modifying the size of their Windows partition after setting up Boot Camp and installing Windows XP.
MacFixIt reader Russ Cusimano has developed a procedure that allows your to expand the Windows partition without destroying it, or having to re-install Windows XP.
- Boot into Mac OS X.
- Launch Disk Utility. Make a new disk image of the "NO NAME" volume and save it (preferably) to an external hard drive.
- Launch Boot Camp Assistant. Select "Restore the startup disk to a single volume."
- Make a new larger Windows partition. Reinstall Windows and the Mac drivers.
- Boot Mac OS X.
- Launch Disk Utility and restore from the saved disk image to the new "NO NAME" partition.
- Boot Windows. Find and delete all the "Desktop" files that Mac OS X left behind.

It says this is a way to expand the Windows partition without having to
destroy it or reinstall Windows XP.
In step 3 it says to restore the startup disk to a single volume, which would
destroy the Windows partition.
Then in step 4 the second sentence says reinstall Windows and the Mac
Drivers.
It sounds like I am doing all the work all over again. What am I not
understanding here?
Here are the steps I did:
Boot into Mac OS X
Launch Boot Camp Assistant. Select "Restore the startup disk to a single
volume."
Restart
Launch Boot Camp Assistant to ake a new larger Windows partition (20 GB).
"Then I got the error: Your Startup disk cannot be partitioned because some
files canot be moved. Backup your startup disk and use Disk Utility to format
yoru startup disk as a single Mac OS extended (Journaeled) volume. Restore
your infomration to the startup disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant
Again."
I'm wondering if I can use diskutil to create my new 20G partition if tho I
removed the old windows partition.
Or am I going to have to backup, format and reinstall from backup before
making a new partion.
