Mac OS X 10.4.6 Special Report: Problems logging in from Windows systems
Some users have reported issues logging into Mac OS X 10.4.6 systems from Windows 98 systems.
MacFixIt reader Darek writes:
"My Windows 98 machines can not login to Mac OS X Server 10.4.6. There is no problem with Windows XP or Windows NT computers."
Another reader writes:
"My home network has 3 computers, two out of date Windows machines, one 98SE and one Xp SP2. Neither has had any upgrades since what I've listed, for I try never to upgrade Microsoft software. The Mac 12" Powerbook is updated regularly.
"After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.6 it was no longer possible to get to the MAC from the 98SE machine, for the first time in 3 years. Whether trying to mount the shared drive or trying to log in using Putty, the error is that the password is invalid. This has been tested with one additional 98SE machine.
"There is no trouble from the XP machine. The Mac can still mount drives on both machines without a problem.
"Since the only change has been to the Mac, I can only assume that some change to SMB in 10.4.6 was only tested with modern versions of Windows, not with relics from the past like 98SE."
