Mac OS X 10.4.6 Special Report: Energy Saver issues -- system will not automatically shut down, etc.

by CNET staff

Apple states that Mac OS X 10.4.6 "addresses an issue in which, when at the login window, the computer would not shut down automatically at a time specified in Energy Saver Schedule preferences"

However, some users are reporting persistent Energy Saver issues after the update.

MacFixit reader Rebecca writes:

"After updating to 10.4.6, I'm having Energy Saver and sleep issues. The computer does not go to sleep at the specified time. It does not go to sleep at all unless I use the 'sleep' from the apple menu and it goes to sleep but immediately wakes up. It seems it does not want to sleep and the only option is to shut it down."

Some of the workarounds suggested in our Wake-From-Sleep special report -- particularly disabling network activity before sleep, turning off all Wake/Other options in Energy Saver, and setting processor performance to "Highest" among others -- have been reported as successful for some readers experiencing these issues under Mac OS X 10.4.6.

Out of three systems to which I applied the 10.4.6 incremental update, a
PowerMacintosh G5 (late 2004) did no longer go to sleep. Afer selecting Sleep
from the Apple menu, it would go through all the motions, but as soon as the
screen went dark and I heard the solenoid click off, it would immediatly click
    back on.
I tried pretty much everything that seemed to potentially apply from the
"Wake-From-Sleep special report," but nothing helped until I got to the "Reset
the PMU" section. On the PowerMac G5 the Power Management Unit's function
is subsumed in the new System Management Unit (SMU), and on the "late
2004 models," the SMU is particularly easy to reset: shut the computer off
and unplug it for 15 seconds!
So easy indeed, it should probably be listed as the first remedy to try.
On other Mac models it requires opening the case (the article includes links to
    detailed instructions).
