Apple has released a new edition of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 -- 5.0R4 -- which allows applications and applets developed for the J2SE 5.0 platform to run on Mac OS X v 10.4.5 and later.

The new release sports improved reliability and compatibility for Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 on Mac OS X v10.4.5 and later. This release includes J2SE version 1.5.0_06. With this update J2SE 5.0 becomes the preferred Java version, superseding Java 1.4.2. Java 1.4.2 is still installed on your machine, but applications will run with J2SE 5.0 unless they specifically request Java 1.4.2.

Applications will make use of the version of Java that they require. It's nothing
you need to concern yourself with. Whatever you do, don't go deleting anything,
because I sense that is why you are asking about 1.3.1. Just leave it alone.

You probably also sensed that that is exactly why I was waiting to hear what
answer MacUnik? would get. Your answer sounds sufficiently logical for me to
say that I will obey! Thanks.

just wondering if this was now extra baggage, like the security updates, which get rollled into the actual system updates, and thus alone, are not longer needed when rebuilding system from scratch

I am no longer able to log in to Hotmail.com on both my dual 2.5GHz G5 and on
my 12inch 867MHz G4 laptop. Internet Explorer still works normally on both.
