Keyboard Update 1.0 for Intel-based Macs (#2): Nullifies noise workarounds for MacBook Pro
As we briefly reported yesterday, Apple's Keyboard Update 1.0 (intended to fix issues with keyboard responsiveness across the line of Intel-based Macs) nullifies the effectiveness of some user workarounds for an issue where MacBook Pros generate a high-pitched whining noise.
One workaround that appear ineffective after the update is engagement of the built-in iSight, usually through use of the mirror widget (as noted in our MacBook Pro special report). After the Keyboard update, the mirror widget must remain on constantly in order to prevent the noise -- prior to the update it could be closed with the whining noise not returning.
MacFixIt reader Kyle Craft writes:
"I applied the keyboard update and now my whining noise is back. I was using the trick were I would turn on / off the mirror widget. Now I have to keep the mirror widget on at all times to keep the whining noise away."
MacFixIt reader John Rose adds:
"Unfortunately, the Apple keyboard update disables the mirror widget whine fix. The whine disappears if the mirror widget is running, with the iSight camera capturing input, but closing the widget causes the whining noise to reappear."
Meanwhile, some readers report the first appearance of a whining noise after applying the update.
Jody Hewell writes:
"I was so happy when I bought my MacBook Pro W8614 a couple of weeks ago and there was no whining noise.
"I applied the update for the keyboard and now I have the whining noise."
