Final Cut Pro (various versions) will not launch

by CNET staff

Several readers have reported an issue where Final Cut Pro 5.1 (and other releases) fails to launch properly under various iteration of Mac OS X.

MacFixIt reader Solihin Thom writes:

"I have a Dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4 with 1.5 GB of RAM, 2 external FireWire hard drives. Just loaded in Final Cut Pro 5.1 - Universal. Crashes before it even boots."

Fixes

Delete Final Cut Pro .plist file Try quitting Final Cut Pro, then delete the file: com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist from the directory:

~/Library/Preferences/ (the tilde [~] represents your home directory)

Disconnect external devices, networked drives In some cases, Final Cut Pro can exhibit issues launching when searching connected drives other than the startup volume. Try disconnecting any FireWire or USB volumes, or network user volumes, then re-launch Final Cut Pro.

Repair permissions One area that the repair permissions function has proven successful in several cases is that of application launch failure. Try quitting Final Cut Pro then running repair permissions (from within Disk Utility -- located in Applications/Utilities) and re-launching.

Final Cut Pro Rescue Some users have reported success with Final Cut Pro Rescue -- an AppleScript application that deletes specific files potentially implicated in a launching problem.

Just got off the phone with Pro Applications tech support. FCP 5.1 would not launch no matter what I tried--from Repair Permissions in Safe Boot to deleting old files and freeing up space on the G-5. He pointed me to Finder/home/library/preferences, and had me drag two items to the trash: the file com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist, and a Final Cut Pro User folder. That did the trick and it opened right up. Big relief.
