Universal Binary version of RealPlayer released

After much anticipation, Real Networks has released a Universal Binary version of RealPlayer, the player of popular Web media formats including RealVideo and RealAudio.

The new release is the first that runs natively on Intel-based Macs, and therefore allows media content to be played inline using Universal Binary browsers like Safari and Firefox -- side-stepping an issue we previously reported where PowerPC-only plug-ins do not mix with browsers running in Intel-native mode.

For more information on the release, as well as a download link, visit VersionTracker's RealPlayer product page.

This new version of RealPlayer (10.1.0, build 400) seems to fix the problem
with it not auto-launching in Safari from audio links on Amazon.com. It was
broken with the previous version where clicking a RealPlayer link would
simply download a file (which would then play the music if opened). I've
tested this on two Macs running Tiger 10.4.5 (1.25Ghz MDD G4 and iSight G5
iMac), and now it works just like it used to.

First time it launched it needed to download a new codec, but after that all
    went smoothly.

Now if Microsoft could just get Windows Media Player to do the same, like it
always used to, I'd be set.

Just use the FMV plugin for Quicktime. It will then play most WMV files with Quicktime.

Windows Media Player on Mac is dead: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia
    Download Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime.

Oops, first posted this in the main thread by mistake:

I have Flip4Mac installed, and it does play most WMV movie files within
QuickTime, however, it does not auto-launch or play WMP audio files for me
from sites such as Amazon.com. Clicking an audio link opens a new QuickTime
window, but when I hit the arrow for Play, all it does is show "Loading..." but
nothing ever loads or plays. It has not worked since upgrading to OS X
    Tiger.

Same here: RealPlayer links now open automatically from Safari. Nice to have
that annoyance fixed, though in fact I'd become used to Safari not opening
downloaded files, and find I prefer to do so manually with .dmg, .zip and similar
downloads. Well, I suppose I can get used to the convenience of not having to
drag RealPlayer links to its window.

BTW, for us old fogeys who don't yet have an Intel Mac (and won't anytime soon),
applying TrimtheFat to this RealPlayer reduces it by 39% (12.6MB)! Apparently
Universalizing this app was not a trivial task.
