RealPlayer 10.1.0 (#2): Crashes in Firefox, Camino; Some codecs require Rosetta
Crashes in Firefox, Camino Several readers report that RealPlayer 10.1.0 -- the first Universal Binary release of the media player -- crashes both Firefox and Camino (Mozilla-based browsers) when accessing embedded content.
The release notes for Camino 1.0.1 mention this problem, stating:
"The recently released Real Player 10.1.0 (400) causes Camino to crash when viewing any Real content. This issue has been reported to Real, however, there is no time frame on a fix. Users are recommended to disable the Real Player plugin or install Real Player 10.0.0."
Some codecs require Rosetta Apparently, although RealPlayer is now a Universal Binary, some of the codecs used by specific media files are still PowerPC-only, requiring RealPlayer to be run under Rosetta in order to play the media properly (see this article for more information on how PowerPC plug-ins and Intel-native applications don't mix).
MacFixIt reader Neil Busis writes:
"hen RealPlayer runs in Universal mode it asks for a codec it can't find When I run it in Rosetta mode, it finds the needed codec, downloads it, and then plays the music. If I switch back to Intel-mode it now displays a different error message - it says the file requires an unsupported codec.
"So, good news: RealPlayer is now Universal. Bad news: the codec used on at least one popular site (Amazon.com) is incompatible with Intel mode, so you have to run it under Rosetta anyway!"
