We've recently received reports indicating that resetting the SMU on iMac G5 (built-in iSight) systems can significantly reduce excessive fan noise.

In order to perform an SMU reset on the iMac G5, use the following steps:

  1. Turn off the system
  2. Unplug all cables, including power
  3. Wait 10-30 seconds.
  4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
  5. Let go of the power button.
  6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.

MacFixIt reader Steve Martarano writes:

"I suddenly had a real problem with fan noise on my 20-inch, first- generation iMac. I was having some major startup problems that were finally fixed by doing an archive install, but the fan noise was worse than ever, and it started as soon as I hit the power button. It was still there 24 hours later, after the iMac was off that entire time. So I reconnected every plug, including the iMac power plug, and that did the trick; no more noise."
