MacBook Pro: Blank screen on wake from sleep

An issue we've run into repeatedly in-house has now gained some outside reader corroboration.

The problem, in essence is that the MacBook Pro does not properly fall asleep -- remaining on but with a blank screen with the lid closed -- or the system displays a blank screen when awoken from sleep.

One MacFixIt reader writes:

"I am using a MacBook Pro 2Ghz, 1 GB RAM, running Mac OS X 10.4.6. In the last week my machine has 'locked' with a dark screen when waking from sleep. I am sure it is because an app is hanging. i end up forced to do the power button down for 4 seconds to restart the machine. I have not found the consistent pattern. sometimes it wakes fine. Since i restart 'in the dark', i haven't determined what apps were open."

Some of the suggestions listed in our Wake-From-Sleep issues tutorial have proven successful for temporarily eliminating this issue, but we've yet to discover a specific definitive fix.
