Apple releases QuickTime 7.1.1

by CNET staff

Apple has released QuickTime 7.1.1, a maintenance update to the key multimedia component of Mac OS X that fixes several issues mentioned in our QuickTime 7.1 special report.

The release notes state that this update "addresses an issue with 3rd party start-up items on Intel Macs. This release also fixes an issue exporting Keynote presentations to iDVD."

Specifically, the update resolves an issue we previously noted where startup stalls when certain StartupItems are present in the /Library/StartupItems or /Library/Internet Plug-ins folders.

More information as well as a download link are available from VersionTracker's QuickTime product page. The new release is also available through Software Update.

UPDATE: Also fixes Acrobat launching bug It appears that this update also resolves an issue where Adobe Acrobat fails to launch on systems with the QuickTime 7.1 update. This bug has been associated with both QuickTime 7.1 and Security Update 2006-003, but appears to be resolved after application of the QuickTime 7.1.1 update.

If you are having problems after applying this update, please let us know.

Since the QuickTime 7.1 Updater was released, I haven't been able to use my Adobe Acrobat Professionel. The software and machine simply froze.

Adobe could only come up with a timeconsuming solution, backup your machine, format the harddisk, install a new Mac OS and transfer back the backup.

After having installed the QuickTime 7.1.1 Updater my Acrobat Pro works again

QuickTime 7.1 (and the most recent Sec. Update) are DISASTERS! What is Apple doing these days, testing these in the vacuum of empty machines in the bowels of Fortress Cupertino? I have seen more applications DIE as a result of these, the bread and butter apps that Apple's bread and butter customers depend on--Quark, Photoshop, you name it. Steverino, get your bloody act together--these two leave you with egg on your face and spinach in your teeth. I won't go NEAR QT 7.1.x for a long time to come.

The application "(null)" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "><CNQL2410_ButtonManager.app><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonSound><>"

I now get this message on boot up (immediately after loading 7.1.1 update. Flash is broken.

Powerbook 1.67GHz, Tiger, 10.4.6. Current on all updates.

Update. Reapplied update after download from Apple website (not Software Update) and problem with Flash and "error on boot" problem went away.

Well, not everyone is having problems. I've had no issues with QT 6.X, 7.0, 7.1,
or 7.11 with FCExpress HD 3 and 3.5, LogicPro7, all the iLife '06 stuff (well,
actually, I never use iMovie or Garageband, just FCE-HD and LogicPro), various
shareware imaging and audio apps that use QT, Reason 3, MaxMSP, etcetc. So,
maybe you've got other system issues causing you headaches.

As of QT 7.1 my mpgs/mpegs play without audio. I know it's due to QT 7.1
because (a) the movies played just fine before 7.1, and (b) they still play just fine
via VLC. I feel a bit messed around by Apple, to tell you the truth, given that
there's no easy way to simply return to an earlier, working version (and no,
Apple, I won't be re-installing OSX, with all of the associated hassles, just to fix
your player; I just won't use it). And I fully agree with your sarcastic comment
regarding "testing in a vacuum...": Any decent QA would have caught this on the
way out of the door (speaking as an ex-QAer of some skill).

    Just installed it on a 5,8 15" Hi-res PB G4 1.67 running 10.4.6 with no drama--everything works.

Yesterday my Software Update noticed the new QuickTime and iWeb updates and proceded to download and install them on my G4 iMac running the current 10.4 OS. QuickTime proceded without a hitch, but iWeb 1.1.1 hit a snag. It was able to down load, but hung twice at 65% of the way through the install process according to the progress bar, and thus I was unable to install the iWeb update.
