MacBook Pro Special Report: LEAP Networks; cannot connect to

by CNET staff

Several users note an issue where the MacBook Pro is unable to connect to LEAP authenticated wireless networks used by several universities and other organizations.

One reader writes:

"I work as an IT/Mac supporter for the Lucerne School of Art and Design. Today I had to support 3 MacBook Pro users - all of them were unable to connect to our LEAP protected wireless LAN."

Users receive the following error in their system log after errors connecting to the LEAP network:

  • mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (127.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds

This appears to be an issue with the TCP/IP implementation used by Mac OS X 10.4.5 for Intel, and will likely require a software update from Apple.

There's no need to blame on the intel-based models, as this thing happens to other, powerpc-based, boxes.

You'll find info on some forums (like here) where this is due to a DNS server timeout. Apparently, Mac OS X is a bit more impatient than usual (not sure about if this is the actual reason.)

The solution mentioned was configuring different DNS servers on the router.
