Mac OS X 10.4.7 for Intel re-released; now posted -- how to determine if you have the old or new version

by CNET staff

Apple has released a revised version of the Mac OS X 10.4.7 updater for Intel-based Macs due to the omission of some files related to OpenGL performance.

A posting to the company's Security-Announce mailing list forwarded by MacFixIt reader Mike Nowak says:

"Only the package that upgrades a Mac OS X v10.4.6 (Intel) system to Mac OS X v10.4.7 (Intel) is being changed.  All other Mac OS X v10.4.7 install packages remain unchanged.

"The change being made to the install package does not affect the security fixes provided in the package."

"The new package is named:  MacOSXUpd10.4.7Intel.dmg"

UPDATE: We have verified that the delta update now posted to Apple's download servers is the revised edition, aforementioned.

In order to determine whether you have the original or revised version of the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Intel delta update, open the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) then enter the following command:

  • /usr/bin/openssl sha1
do not press return, instead press the space bar. Next, in the Finder, navigate to the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Intel disk image. Drag it to the Terminal window, which will result in the file path being copied. Now press return. A checksum will now be displayed. If the checksum is as follows:
  • 10aa57dfccd63accb0939a894cea202a8910fb45
you have the new version. Otherwise, you have the original iteration (sans-OpenGL performance enhancements) and should re-download the updater.

There are problems with 10.4.7. Intel. Since updating I have had recurring
problems launching various applications. Photoshop CS has already been
mentioned. I have also had problems with Pages and Omnis Studio. The
applications icon will bounce a little then fail in its launch. I hoped that the most
recent delta would solve this behaviour but it has not.

I assume you've tried all the usual suspects like repairing permissions etc?

Instead of updating through SoftwareUpdate, I directly downloaded the Combo update from the Apple Website, even though I was running 10.4.6. I am confused as to whether I should update or not? It says that only the updater from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 was changed. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

I installed the 10.4.7 update via Software Update the day it was released
(Tuesday). Today I downloaded the non-combo version of the update via the
Apple web site Downloads section. After installing that my OS X 10.4.7 build
number had changed from 8J2135 to 8J2135a.

Is the same true for the combo update which I asume would have a different checksum regardless ?
