Mac OS X 10.4.7 Special Report: Quark Xpress 6.5: Problems with fonts, temporary fix
Several users have reported an issue where QuarkXpress 6.5 unexpectedly quits when attempting to open documents with certain fonts.
In most cases, this issue can be temporarily resolved by using a tool like Font Finagler to clear font caches. However, the problem will generally return after a restart.

I just ran into the same issue last weekend on a client's Mac, and also reverted to 10.4.6 to solve the problem. However, before I did, I checked the Console and System logs, which both reported that the mdimportserver daemon was repeatedly crashing and restarting.
Through subsequent research (thanks, Google and the web), I learned this process is used by Spotlight to index the hard drive. Others have reported various problems with this process over the last year or two (do a Google search of the term to find various examples of this).
I suspect (as of now) that a change to mdimportserver in 10.4.7 causes it to choke on some kind of font or font cache files. Plenty of posters to the Quark forums are saying that using a font cache cleaning utility (most cited Font Finagler) cleared up the problem temporarily, but some reported having to clear out caches over and over. I used the cache cleaning function in Insider Software's Smasher.
Some also reported having to go into QuarkXPress 6.x>jaws>ttfont and remoivng all the .ps files there for Quark to behave correctly again.
I hope somebody, maybe the folks at MacFixit, can do a better job of detective work than I to figure out the cause of this problem.
