Flip4Mac released as a Universal Binary
Resolving one of the biggest issues (see previous coverage) with embedded media on Intel-based Macs, Telestream Software has released a Universal Binary edition of Flip4Mac WMV -- the software that allows you to play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a web browser.
A full list of changes for this release is as follows:
- Added universal binary support for Intel Macs
- Added playback optimizations for Intel Macs
- Added significant export optimizations for PowerPC Macs
- Added multi language audio support in player
- Added overlay when importing WMV content in trial mode
- Added support for web authors to disable "save as" feature in web browser
- Improved support for MMS servers and live streams
- Fixed DCT Blocking issue (progressive deterioration with increasing distance from previous keyframe)
- Fixed encode errors when the audio bit rate is set higher than the video bit rate.
The new release is available as a 5.8 MB standalone download.

started working (sort of). The video/audio plays but no controls work
(volume, pause, etc.). Prior to Flip4Mac 2.1 the at&t/Yahoo video player refused
to work at all in any Mac browser. I had previously contacted Yahoo about it and
they simply said their player does not work with Macs and had no plans to
change it.
I unchecked the flip for nac browser plug in and can watch some but not all
AT&T/Yahoo videos, albeit after a long loading delay. They told me thay are
working on this but could give no time table, and I have been told this, the last
two years.
"Added overlay when importing WMV content in trial mode" means that they have REDUCED the functionality of the trial mode by obscuring my view of the content.
"Added support for web authors to disable 'save as' feature in web browser" means that they have REDUCED the functionality of all versions by crippling my ability to save content.
I was thinking this same thing when I read about this update.
Saving the WMV files out of the web page was one of my favorite features (hardly
a bug). I guess you can still snoop into the HTML code and snag the files...but it
is just more work.
So now I guess the game of "how long can I hold off on updating this app at all"
begins.
Thankfully, I am still on a Powerbook...so this version doesn't do much for me
anyhow.
