Flip4Mac 2.1.0.33 (#2): Still doesn't work with Windows Media DRM files

The new Universal Binary edition of Flip4Mac -- allows you to play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a web browser -- still does not function properly with Windows Media DRM-protected files, resulting in the inability to view some embedded media content.

This includes content from the MLB.com Web site and others.

MacFixIt reader Dave writes:

"I was excited about the new release of the Universal Binary for Flip4Mac plugin; and since they promised they took their time to make everything work. I was confident to install it. However, it does not operate correctly on the MLB.com website with any browser. The pic was super clear--but the controls have rendering issues. I uninstalled it and went back to using media player. The uninstaller worked very well. Back to normal. Running a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.4.7."

We have not determined whether or not Telestream plans to introduce DRM-playback functionality in a forthcoming release of Flip4Mac.

DRM is licensed by Microsoft. Microsoft has chosen not to license it for the Mac.
Microsoft and Microsoft alone has the legal right to license or refuse to license
the use of DRM on the Mac.

The issues people are having with MLB.com probably have nothing to do with
    DRM.

I heard reports though that at around the AllStar Game BOTH Mac and Unix OS
based systems begain to have issues with MLB.com

    Article 0056
    Category: Flip4Mac WMV Components
Subject: Flip4Mac support for Microsoft?s DRM protected material
    Date:

Microsoft makes Windows Media DRM technology available for Windows operating systems and many device platforms. At this time, Microsoft has no plans to offer Windows Media DRM support on the Macintosh.

I think that says it all.

As far a MLB.com is concerned, I can get it to work, but it's a pain. I've lost the ability to watch games from Firefox, however Safari will work with an external viewer (QuickTime via Flip4Mac). Ignore the MLB.com warnings about not supporting Safari. MLB.com is a mess if you aren't using the latest Windows OS. Too bad I can't get my money back. Class action, anyone?

first, when i downloaded the Flip4Mac package, there was a notice very near the
download button that clearly stated that DRM media were not supported. so it's
not as though they're making false claims.
second, i can't imagine why anyone would want to watch MLB.com. but, to each
    their own...

The lack of support for DRM on the Mac platform isn't just a deficiency of Flip4Mac, is it? I didn't think WMP for Mac OS X supported it, either.

Yes..sorry to say, but Microsoft has the say on that one. Telestream is doin
great, though...hear they have acquired Popwire....I'll expect some cool new stuff
    from them in the future.
