iTunes 5.0 Special Report: Playback problems

by CNET staff

A handful of users have reported issues with music playback under iTunes 5.0 -- generally audio dropouts that last a few seconds, or other imperfections in the audio stream. Many of these issues may in fact be caused by the presence of QuickTime 7.0.2.

One reader writes:

"First I update to QuickTime 7.0.2 and than to iTunes 5. Since update to iTunes 5 any songs played in iTunes or QuickTime sound crackly and has short drop out, change intensity between left and right."

Another reader, W Lombardo adds:

"Just upgraded to iTunes 5.0 and all music sounds scratchy and kind of muffled. I tried the equalizer but I can't get it to sound as good as before. I've used this machine with itunes for along time and now the sound is noticeably worse. I am using QuickTime 7.0.2"

Deland Craven further corroborates:

"Just updated iTunes on my PowerBook running Mac OS X 10.4.2. I also installed Quicktime 7.0.2. I am experiencing odd playback and loss of audio. When I connect to external speakers through the audio jack in the back, I get playback through the external speakers but I also get slightly audible static from the onboard speakers."

We have several other reports indicating similar behavior.

Users experiencing this issue may want to try reverting to QuickTime 7.0.1 using the re-installer tool now available from Apple.
