iTunes 5.0 Special Report: Some music (particularly purchased tracks) not transferring to iPod

by CNET staff

A number of readers note an issue where music purchased from the iTunes store (encoded in the AAC format) do not properly transfer to their iPods after the update to iTunes 5.0.

Users experiencing this problem generally do not have problems transferring tracks that were not purchased through the iTunes music store.

iPod updater may need to be re-applied Although the iPod Updater 2005-09-06 package only contains changes for users of the iPod nano (for other iPod models, it contains the same software as the 2005-06-26), some users have reported that re-applying the iPod updater (either 2005-09-06 or 2005-06-26) resolves some issues with song transfer that appeared after iTunes 5.0 installation.

Once you have downloaded the 36.1 MB iPod Updater 2005-09-26 updater and launch it, an application will appear in your /Applications/Utilities folder that will be used to complete the process.

Another potential solution is to first select one of the purchased tracks and attempt to play it. In many cases, the song will not be authorized for play on its host Mac, and you will be required to enter your Apple identification e-mail address and password. After authorizing the song(s), re-attempt synchronization.

Finally, failing the above to procedures, try performing a Restore process on your iPod. Note that you will lose all music currently stored on the iPod during this procedure.
