iTunes 5.0 Special Report: Release Notes

by CNET staff

On September 7th 2005, Apple released iTunes 5, the latest iteration of its music playing, purchasing and podcasting software.

The new release includes a new Search Bar; the ability to organize playlists into folders; Smart Shuffle, which lets the user change the "randomness" of shuffled songs; and the ability for Windows users to automatically sync contacts and calendars from Outlook onto their iPods. The iTunes Music Store has also added parental controls and album reviews, and now features a catalog of over two million songs.

iTunes 5 for Mac is available for immediate standalone download, and through Software Update.

ITunes will not transfer my purchased music to both my 40 gig IPod or my IPod Mini. When I try to do a restore from the latest IPod updater, I would get a message to connect IPod even although it is connected. I would even try to reconnect. The updater does not see the IPods. I hope the fix comes soon.
