iTunes 5.0 Special Report: Make sure your iApps are updated
As noted by Apple in the iTunes documentation, it is imperative that you have the latest update Mac OS X (10.2.8, 10.3.9 or 10.4.2 depending on whether you are using Jaguar, Panther or Tiger respectively) for correct iTunes 5.0 operation.
Also, if you are using any iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, etc.) they will need to be updated to the latest versions for proper interaction with iTunes 5.0.

mulitple upgrades. But I'm deeply disappointed to see that Apple has adopted
the "do it or else" stance when it comes to "selling" it's software upgrades.
I purposely stuck with 10.3.6 because it caused no problems and subsequent
upgrades produced a flurry of trouble reports. Likewise, I've stayed with
iTunes 4.7.1 because it still works for everything I need and doesn't force me
to suck up to the recording industry (quite as much). I don't use iPhoto
except to run experiments to duplicate trouble reports and come up with
fixes so that others seeking help can have it. I have three very good image
editors which provide much more flexibility and don't "capture" gigabytes of
image files as their own. Overall - I've refused to spend the time on the
constant Apple updates because I DON'T HAVE THE TIME.
Especially so when this upgrade of iTunes doesn't seem to be working for
many people and STILL requires a System upgrade and upgrades to other
apps.
If Apple keeps this up, I may decide to just go with a good Unix-flavored OS
and get my applications for free.
