iPod Updater 2005-09-23: Problems with models other than the iPod Shuffle

by CNET staff

Although iPod Updater 2005-09-23 only contains software changes for the iPod Shuffle, a number of users are experiencing issues with other iPod models after applying the update.

MacFixIt reader Peter writes:

"Since I installed the latest iPod Updater (Sept release), my fourth generation iPod won't hold more than 600 songs, although it'll load all the files and podcasts I want. While reloading my 4000 songs from my iTunes 5.0.1, it stops after 400 to 600 songs and states that the iPod cannot be written to or receive data from. And it quits. Has anyone else seen this? I've run Disk Utility, DiskWarrior and Tech Tools Pro 4 repeatedly. I've reinstalled the updater 5-6 times. I'm lost."

Carole adds:

"I installed it last night and my iPod mini won't work anymore. I get the exclamation mark folder icon. I tried resetting it many times. I also went ahead and restored it [...] I get the don't disconnect icon flashing forever."

Alan is experiencing issues with an iPod nano after the update. He writes:

"Upon applying iPod Updater 2005-09-23, iTunes 4.9 acted quirky. The iPod Nano does not stay mounted on desktop. I get a message that the device was disconnected improperly and to go to Finder and eject drive. It isn't anywhere to be found so I waited about 5 minutes and on the nano a message said the update was completed successfully. The message was there about 3 seconds and did not come back. [...] After plugging and unplugging the Nano a couple of times and it did it's Syncing it seems to be okay."

I'm using a 4G iPod. Haven't had any problem with synching the iPod to iTunes.
All file updates have run smoothly. iPod is holding 13 GB of songs.

I understand this update is only for the shuffle. I am not sure why you would
use it to update any other iPod. I just don't download it if it doesn't contain a
firmware updat for my specific model.

I have all the same problems. Apple support is flummoxed, and my ipod is dead in the water. I'd like to know what the hell Apple is going to do about this because I'm at wit's end.
