iPod Updater 2005-09-23 (#4): Problems after updating: Try eliminating USB hubs, switching ports
We continue to cover issues with iPod Updater 2005-09-23, which only contains software changes for the iPod Shuffle.
As noted yesterday, one of the most common problems involves an inability to transfer all tracks to an iPod from iTunes. The transfer is interrupted, failing partway through, or reports success but results in only a fraction of the music transferring.
In some cases this issue can be resolved (as noted in a number of previous reports) by switching the USB or FireWire port your iPod is connected too, or connecting the iPod directly to your system rather than through a USB hub.
MacFixIt reader Chuck is one reader who had success using an alternate USB port. In his case, switching the iPod to his Cinema Display's USB port -- which is high powered -- from the front USB port on his Power Mac G5 -- which is low powered -- fixed the issue.
Chuck writes:
"I had similar problems with my daughter's new 20GB iPod (w/color screen). What did the trick for me was synching it through the USB port on my cinema display rather than the port on the front of my PowerMac G5 (a dual 2GHz, for what it's worth). Attempting to synchronize through the front port, the update stalled every few songs, with an error mesage saying the disk could not be written to. Changing the port completely solved the problem."
