If you are experiencing an issue where some of the music in your library is missing (from display in iTunes, but not from the actual ~/Music/iTunes folder) after the iTunes 5.0.1 update, you may want to attempt the following process, which will completely re-build your library:
- Open your ~/Music/iTunes folder and move "iTunes Library" file to another the location (the Desktop will suffice)
- Restart iTunes, creating a new Library file
- Open iTunes preferences, click the Advanced tab, and check the option not to copy any files when adding to library
- From the file Menu select 'Add to Library' and choose the iTunes Music folder.
Index:
- Release Notes, update recommendations
- Cannot burn MIDI files

- iPod not recognized
- iTunes refuses to quit
- iTunes will not launch
- Old version of iTunes being opened
- Problems downloading through Software Update

- See the iTunes 5.0 special report for more workarounds

In addition you will lose your playlists?
I let iTunes organize my music directory, so if I suspect any music is lost, drop my iTunes Music folder on iTunes and all missing files are relocated without creating duplicats.
library is intact, the music files themselves are gone. Examples - seven out of
twelve songs missing from a BB King album; one out of twelve missing from a
Jimmy Buffett album. Try to play a missing song and iTunes marks it with an
exclamation point and provides this message - "The song ... could not be used
because the original file caould not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
