A handful of users are reporting issues installing iTunes 5.0.1 through Software Update, receiving an error message indicating that there were problems expanding the package.

MacFixIt reader Ward writes:

"Updating via Software Update has been working well in Tiger ... until iTunes 5.0.1. I attempted Install and Keep Package several times, each time getting an 'expand package' error moments after the download finishes."

Users experiencing this issue may want to try some of the suggestions in our tutorial "When Software Update Won't Work (System cannot see or install updates)", in particular making sure that the tar and pax components are properly installed, deleting the iTunes 5.0 receipt and performing a permissions repair, or simply obtaining the standalone iTunes 5.0.1 update from Apple's download page.
