iTunes 5.0.1 Special Report: iPod not recognized

A handful of users are reporting that their iPods are no longer recognized after the 5.0.1 update, resulting in a lack of ability to synchronize data. MacFixIt reader Joe writes:

"Upgraded today to iTunes 5.0.1, through Software Update, and now iTunes will not recognize my iPod Photo (60G) which otherwise mounts on my desktop. This was working yesterday. A quick search of the Apple forums suggests this has occurred to others as well. Since a HD failure has my drive out for recovery, I'm loathe to wipeout the iPod and start again (I think I'll lose some of my photos). Have reset the iPod and tried different ports (the other FW and USB as well) to no avail."

In some cases, resetting the iPod can result in a return of recognition by the host Mac.
