Illustrator CS2 12.0.1 (#2): Problems installing

by CNET staff

Yesterday we noted some issues with pasting from external applications in Adobe Illustrator CS2, which appear to be resolved in the new 12.0.1 update. Today we cover some problems with the same update, particularly an issue with installation.

Problems installing A number of users are reporting issues installing the 12.0.1 update through Adobe's automatic software update mechanism.

MacFixIt reader Ron writes:

"On two separate machines, each licensed to run Illustrator, the update fails to run. I consistently get a message that the update failed, on both machines."

B. Jefferson Le Blanc adds:

"The Adobe Illustrator CS 2 12.0.1 update does not work for us. I get an error message saying that the update failed and then a message saying the update is complete. But when I check again for updates with a CS 2 app, the Illustrator update is still listed as not installed. Nor has the Illustrator version number or last updated date changed. I tried several times with the auto update app launched first from Illustrator and then from Photoshop. No joy. I captured the downloaded update .dmg file and launched the update manually and got the same result."

Update not appearing For other users, the Illustrator CS2 12.0.1 release is not showing up in the automatic update function.

In order to workaround this issue, Adobe suggests the following:

  • Navigate to /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Updater
  • Move the file AdobeESDGlobalApss.xml to a location outside of this folder (your Desktop or another location)
  • Again attempt updating

In other cases, the issue may be prior removal of ar.lproj files to remove what were thought to be extraneous language files for monolingual environments -- a task done with a utility like Macaroni or DeLocalizer, or through a manual process.

If you have removed any of these files, you may need to first delete the Adobe Illustrator CS2 12.0.0 application, re-install it from the original disc, then re-attempt the update.

Adobe also notes that the new release is currently only available in English, with other languages forthcoming.

Before I read the advice you got from Adobe about removing the
"AdobeESDGlobalApps.xml" file I trashed (and emptied the trash as per the
uninstall instructions on the CS 2 CD) Illustrator CS 2 and reinstalled it. The
update worked on the fresh install of Illustrator. But, if it works, just
removing the one file would be a whole lot easier. I'll try to remember that
solution for the next time this happens.

In addition, after the reinstall, several other Adobe CS 2 updates that I had
previously applied were listed again as not present. I went ahead and
downloaded and installed them, too. The Illustrator update came last and
believe me I was relieved when I saw only an installation complete message.
The Illustrator version number confirmed the successful update. Illustrator
launched with my previous palette settings in tact so it remembered my
preferences, which means, I assume, that they were not corrupt or in any way
    implicated in the update problem.

Since this is not a new issue with Adobe updates one cannot help but
wonder why they haven't fixed the problem themselves by now.
