Office 2004 11.2.1 (#4): Restoring colored dots in Entourage projects; Views not remembered, how to fix
Restoring colored dots in Entourage projects One of the more prominent, widespread issues we covered with regard to Office 2004 SP2 was a situation where the colored dots on Office project calendar events (indicating their status) are no longer displayed after applying Security Update 2005-008. Apparently, this bug is caused by the security update's tighter restrictions on PICT and GIF images (intended to prevent a buffer overflow security breach).
Now, MacFixit reader Ben reports a somewhat complicated and involved workaround that involves replacing specific frameworks changed in the Security Update with versions provided on your original Mac OS X installation CD/DVD.
Note that this workaround does pose a security risk as it undoes measurements enacted by Apple to prevent a buffer overflow. It is only recommended if you desperately need to restore project dot functionality. Make sure to perform a full backup before attempting the workaround.
First you will need to download Hidden Files 1.0 and get your Mac OS X Installation CD/DVD handy. Also, make sure you know your system administrator password.
The instructions, as presented by Ben, are as follows:
- Download the Hidden Files script. Follow the directions to reveal your hidden folders. See ReadMe within that file.
- Go to your Utilities folder (within your Applications folder)
- Launch Terminal
- Type cd /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A and press return
- Type sudo chmod -R 777 Frameworks
- Enter your master password
- Put the OS Installation CD/DVD into your CD/DVD drive
- Go to the Finder
- Go to your Installation CD, look for the System Folder, double click on it, go to Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/
- Copy QD.Framework and ImageIO framework to your desktop (or just to the clipboard)
- Still in Finder, click on Macintosh HD (or whatever you call your hard drive) and to to System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Framework s/
- Rename ImageIO.framework and QD.framework (ImageIO2.framework and QD2.framework).
- Paste ImageIO framework and QD.framework.
- Click on both and choose Get Info. Choose Owners and Permissions, Choose Details, click the lock to unlock. Change the Owner to System and the Group to Wheel. Choose Apply to Enclosed Items. (You may need to enter your password again). Click the lock again to make the changes (you?ll have to do it with both frameworks.)
- Go back to the Terminal
- Type sudo chmod ?R 755 Frameworks
- Exit the terminal ? (type exit and/or Apple Q)
- Go back to Hidden Folders and Hide Folders (see Readme in that file)
- Fire up Entourage and see if your dots have returned.
Views not remembered, how to fix Yesterday we reported on an issue where Entourage 2004 11.2.1 no longer remembers view set-ups established during the previous run.
In some cases this issue can be resolved by accessing the "File" menu in Entourage, then navigating to the Preferences option.
Once in the Preferences pane, click the "General" tab then turn off, then on "Display small navigation buttons (Maximize Folders and Views list)"

placement of Mail windows in Entourage 2004? They always open in the
upper left corner. By contrast, Notes windows will open in the position and
size of the one you last closed, so you can control their position (as you
would expect.)
