Apple releases AirPort Extreme 2005-001

by CNET staff

Apple has released an update for AirPort Extreme-equipped Macs and PowerBooks/iBooks.

The cryptic release notes indicate only that this update This update fixes reliability and resolves AirPort compatibility issues with certain third party 802.11 cards and access points for Mac OS X v10.4.3 and later.

However, users indicate that this release restores access for some third-party wireless devices that were broken with the release of Mac OS X 10.4.2, and remained so after the Mac OS X 10.4.3 update.

The new release is available through Software Update, or as a standalone download [777 KB].

If you are having any problems with this update, please let us know.

I am waiting to see if Apple has fixed the problem with the new revision of PB
    with ram /kernel problems.

Is this the software fix that we have been waiting for?

Would be great to know if this update has done the job....

I posted screenshots to that thread that show my
system (2 gig) with a ton of apps open (280 meg free or so) and a nice steady
ping going to my FreeBSD server with no problems after the update.
Yesterday prior to the update this would result in massive dropped pings, and
REAL high latency like 300-500ms or more.

The update appears to have fixed the issues I was seeing with wireless under
heavy memory usage with 2 gig of RAM.

Also Apple has reported that this problem is filed under BugID#: 4245181 for
those that wish to track it and get updates.

Signal readout in menu line dropped significantly after update! - between one to
two lines less, - both on the Pbook 1 Gig, and the Imac 20". Maybe this is
cosmetic, and a change in what the readout represent? (speed, power?) as the
figures in Istumbler for both my base stations are decent (c. 40-45) and almost
    as before...
Wireless setup: Two different Airport bases on first and second floor, in a WDS
setup 7m apart direct distance, distance to macs from nearest base, about 3-4
    m.

Seems I connect faster after this update? Maybe I am dreaming but who
knows? No problems with my Ti Power Book or desktop G-5 both running
    10.4.
