iTunes 6.0.1 (#6): Videos, audio files stopping before their end

by CNET staff

Last week we continued coverage of an issue where videos from the music store or (in more cases) video podcasts fail to complete playing.

Generally, the video will simply freeze. Users can fast forward and rewind -- viewing frames in the otherwise unplayable region of the video -- but any attempts to press the play button again results in a few seconds of video playing, then a repeat of the stall.

In some cases, the issue can be resolved by simply unsubscribing from a problematic video podcast then re-subscribing.

MacFixIt reader Rafael writes:

"I just wanted to let you know that I experienced this, and it usually happened after the video download was somehow interrupted. I followed the usual procedure of unsubscribing and then subscribing again to the podcast and then downloaded the full video, once that happened it played fine."

VBR Music tracks stopping before their end Meanwhile, users are reporting a similar issue with audio tracks that use variable bitrates (VBR):

One reader writes:

"Have a similar problem with my iTunes when playing some Mp3's with variable bitrate (VBR). the tunes stops before they are really ending. iTunes shows one song to be 3.10min. long, while its really 4.13min. long! The only way to hear the end of the song is to 'scroll' into the last minute. Have seen this happened while playing VBR with WinAmp at my old PC to, but at the end WinAmp ignores the calculated time and continues to play till the songs are really ending either way."

Wondering if somebody can be of assistance. I'm using an older Mac 7200/90
using OS 9.1. and need to upgrade my acrobat reader. All I casn find is offered
to OS x or above. There must be the same offered for my operating system.
Any and all suggestions will be welcome!

    Thanks, Sincerely, Randy Weaver

I bought an iTunes video for 300yen here in Japan that won't play without the
audio stopping. The video looks like a bad slide show. I shared some other files
with a friend as an experiment and they play fine in the iTunes player. They
    were given to me - I didn't pay. I'm running a year 2000 G3 with a built in video
card - the CPU is 400Mhz and I have a gig of ram. Tiger is slowing things down.
Panther was optimnal. Is this part of the issue with the latest iTunes - forgive
me if I'm not on topic and I've raised a lot of issues here but... I'd like a G4 or G5
but it's not an option now. I know how planned obscelecence makes advances in
technology viable and ghosts run rampant in machines but is there a better way?
It seems consumers and business people need to develop a more trusting
relationship. Does that make sense to any one out there?

I have had the VBR early-stop problem on my iPod (iPod Photo -
60GB. I reported the bug, along with a sample song, via the developer bug
report system about six months ago, no fix so far). However, I've never seen it
in iTunes. And the same VBR tune (recorded on an Archos running
Linux) plays fine in iTunes 6.01.
