Firefox 1.5 (#3): Modifying the address bar; Crashes; more

by CNET staff

Modifying the address bar As previously noted, the behavior of the URL entry field has been slightly modified in Firefox 1.5. In the new release, a single click on the current URL will not result in the entire address being selected, instead placing the cursor where the user clicks.

You can change the behavior back to its old method of functioning via the following process:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Type "about:config" on the url address bar (without the quotes)
  3. Find the field "browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll"
  4. Change it from "False" (default) to "True"

Crashes Users continue to report frequent crashes in Firefox 1.5.

MacFixIt reader Norman Winn writes:

"I've had 23 crashes since I got automatically upgraded to Firefox 1.5. This is in 21 days of use. All have been reported with Talkback. I've heard nothing from the Firefox team who are usually good about bug tracking. This makes me think that there must be many more like me.

"I'm on a Powerbook using OS X 10.4.3. Was on 10.4.2 at time of upgrade. Have since done the software update for Java which might have improved things a little."

Problems with Web forms A handful of readers report issues with HTML forms in Firefox 1.5.

One reader writes:

"I get an issue when using Firefox with a phpBB forum. Occasionally the text input boxes become unresponsive. I can't duplicate this on demand, but essentially it means that I can't add comments to the forums. Quitting and restarting Firefox solves the issue."

Yahoo 'Color and Graphics' not functional A number of users are reporting they they cannot use Yahoo's 'Color and Graphics' e-mail composer under Firefox 1.5.

    Modifying the address bar :
Firefox 1.5 crashes at opening since I changed
the "browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll" to yes. Any suggestions on how to reverse
    the process?

The setting should be set to True, not Yes. If you want to go back to the default, change it back to False.

I too have the problem with text boxes. After a few clicks and attempts to type (in any text box, URL box, googlebar) FF just up and dies. It sucks.

I will occasionally have this text box problem, too -- in fact I find that Firefox becomes reluctant to respond to the keyboard. However, if I switch out of Firefox, to the Finder, say, and back, the issues are resolved.

    Easy workaround.

Using OS 10.3.9 and Firefox 1.5, downloading the nightly builds as well every day. Absolutely no problems or crashes since the release of 1.5 and am even using a custom user.js that includes different user agents. No problems reported here. Clicking in the URL bar places the insertion point where I need it rather than selecting the entire URL. Left the about:config alone. Perhaps more anomalies one can chalk up to Tiger, which is even more testimony towards my staying with 10.3.9 on my menagerie of Macs.

Yahoo Mail has been revamped to look like/function like Entourage. Of course,
it's not available on Safari, however, it is available on Firefox. If you have a
Yahoo mail account, check it out!
