Firefox 1.5 (#4): More on problems with text input boxes; Able to access new Yahoo Mail beta

by CNET staff

More on problems with text input boxes We continue to report on an issue where text input boxes become unresponsive in Firefox 1.5.

One simple workaround is to simply use the tried and true method of entering text in a separate editor and then pasting it into Web forms.

MacFixIt reader Elaine is one user who has switched to this method in reaction to the Firefox 1.5 flaw. She writes:

"I too have experienced the unresponsive keyboard as described today. My temporary workaround is to type the form answers into a TextEdit document and either use Copy in Text Edit and then Paste into FireFox form or Drag and Drop the answer line by line into the form.

"The workaround was helpful during one of those live chat tech help sessions when I couldn't type anything into the text fields. I even had to go to the Dock to return to the Firefox window to paste or drop the text into the fields. I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.3 and Firefox 1.5, with the NoScript extension enabled."

Meanwhile, James Kaup corroborates the problem on eBay:

"I'm having the same problem. It happens on eBay's site in the input boxes for subcategories found on the left-hand side of a search page. I do seem to get one chance if Firefox is the last program opened, but even that situation is no guarantee of success."

Able to access new Yahoo Mail beta Joseph Mina notes that Firefox 1.5, and not Safari, is able to access Yahoo's new beta web-based e-mail service.

Joseph writes:

"Yahoo has just announced Yahoo Mail, however, it's still in Beta Form. While available through Firefox, it is not accessible in Safari. Would be great to have this Mail program in Safari. It seems Yahoo's Apple bias is stronger than ever.

"The beta version has the look and feel of Microsoft Entourage, including color and graphic capabilities, and a preview pane below the list of e-mails in a particular folder. Quite a change.

"I've tried it out in Firefox. Have not noticed any problems so far."

I have 3 yahoo accounts, one of which is Yahoo-Plus (I believe $20/year). The
beta version of the new Yahoo mail is only available to the Plus account.

I've been having trouble with HTML "popup menu" (or "select list") widgets
    rendering properly too.

I think I've narrowed the problem down to form elements inside a "<div>" tag
on dynamically created pages. I cannot duplicate the problem with static
pages, and I think it may also have something to do with using CSS rules and
Javascript to show/hide the layer (<div>) that contains the form element.

I'll work on it some more and try to narrow it down...
