More on iChat problems being caused by router settings
Last week we reported that specific settings on routers and other networking hardware can cause problems in Apple's iChat.
In particular, we noted that the uPnP (Universal Plug and Play) option on some routers has to be disabled in order for iChat to run without persistently quitting on some systems. However, we've also heard reports that turning this option on was necessary for iChat to operate at all.
As previously stated, your best bet is to experiment with toggling this option in your router's configuration (usually accessible via a browser, check your device's manual) if you are having iChat issues.
We've since received reports confirming that turning off uPNP resolves various issues.
MacFixIt reader Phil writes:
"I recently had the same problem. in my case I had upgraded the dg834g firmware weeks before i had ichat problems. I found that if i reset the router ichat would work once. Another AIM client worked fine, so i suspect it is a iChat issue."
"Turning off upnp on the router 'fixed' iChat."
