Flip4Mac issues -- in iLife apps and other applications

We continue to receive a number of reports from users who experience various problems apparently related to the presence of the Flip4Mac components, which provide Windows Media file compatibility in QuickTime.

The problems associated with the presence of Flip4Mac include freezes and crashes in iWeb, GarageBand and other iLife applications, as well as some scattered reports of issues in Mail.app and other third-party applications.

One reader writes:

"I installed the WMV plug-ins for QuickTime. Immediately, Mail app would close without warning when switching messages (or any other action, for that matter). Ran the Uninstaller for Flip4Mac. Now all is back to normal. Did not try other apps."

MacFixIt reader Greg adds:

"I had problems with Eudora 6.23 and Flip4Mac QuickTime WMV plugin. I couldn't close emails with large wmv attachments without Eudora bombing. Also after properly shutting down Eudora, the 'Eudora has unexpectedly quit' box would pop up. Both problems disappeared after uninstalling Flip4Mac plugin."

Before uninstalling Flip4Mac, you should make sure the latest release (2.0.1) does not resolve your issues.

Flip4Mac can be uninstalled either via the uninstall application shipped with the Flip4Mac download, or by deleting the following files:

  • Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.webplugin
  • Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
  • Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
  • Macintosh HD/Library/PreferencePanes/WmvPlayer.prefPanel
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/Flip4Mac WMV Import Installer.pkg
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/Flip4Mac WMV Export Installer.pkg

I experienced crashes in Now Up-to-Date when a find contact action was
initiated on an event. Uninstalling Flip4Mac fixed it.

I just installed iLife '06, and have Flip4Mac (2.0.1) installed on 10.4.4 system. I haven't had any issues with iWeb, iDVD or any of the other iLife applications. I really haven't had a good chance to test everything, but so far no issues. I did some Blogging work from iPhoto to iWeb last night and it worked well.

The internet plugins killed ability to view videos of the Daily Show on Comedy Central, in Firefox or MSIE. Removing them (only the plugins), fixed it.
