iTunes 6.0.2 (#2): Unable to run disk utility after update; Gone from Apple's download page; more

by CNET staff

[Originally published yesterday, January 11th]

Unable to run Disk Utility after update Several users have reported that they are unable to properly run Disk Utility after applying the iTunes 6.0.2 update, receiving the error message:

"Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."

part-way through the repair process.

The problem generally affects users running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

MacFixIt reader Philip Wheelock writes:

"I installed iTunes 6.0.2 via Software Update; restarted and found I could not repair disk permissions with Disk Utility, even starting from system installer disk. Disk Utility stalls approximately 1/3 of the way through and displays this error message: 'Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.' Never seen this before."

There are two potential workarounds for this issue:

  • Delete the "Chess" application and its associated .plist file (com.apple.Chess.plist, located in ~/Library/Preferences -- the Library folder inside your user directory) and attempt to re-run Disk Utility
  • Delete iTunes 6.0.2 and its associated .plist file (com.apple.iTunes.plist, locaed in ~/Library/Preferences). Re-install iTunes 6.0.1 (from a backup, if available) and attempt to run Disk Utility again.

If you are still having issues, note that you can still startup from a different volume (or the Mac OS X installation disc) and repair permissions successfully on your normal startup volume.

Interestingly, iTunes 6.0.2 is no longer available from Apple's download page, indicating that the company may have pulled the software. However, the update is still available from the standard iTunes download page and through Software Update.

Hiding the music store bar (MiniStore) Several readers have inquired about how to remove the music store "related" browser bar, placed at the bottom of the main iTunes window by default in version 6.0.2.

As noted in Knowlege Base article #303066, uou can show or hide the MiniStore by choosing Show MiniStore or Hide MiniStore in the Edit menu or by clicking the "Show or Hide the MiniStore" button (a downward facing arrow in the lower right portion of the iTunes window)

Blank Library view For some users, the Library (track listing) pane appears blank (white) when iTunes 6.0.2 is launched, or at various other times. This issue can usually be alleviated by clicking on the iTunes music store or another item in the left navigation bar then toggling back to the Library listing.

AirTunes now works with multiple speaker sets One reader notes that the AirTunes feature (when used in conjunction with an AirPort Express) in iTunes 6.0.2 works with multiple speaker sets.

The reader writes:

"I just tested it playing a song simultaneously through the speakers on my PowerBook as well as in the living room. To make it even more interesting, the laptop was reading the song from my desktop PowerMac G4 in my office. Lots of wireless delivery going on...and there was no lag between the speakers' sound either. Awesome. Thanks Apple!"

I've found my iBookG3 with this issue cannot repair disk permissions
from a booted OSX 10.3.0 retail CD; nor can the machine use a retail
OSX 10.3.2 bootable disc#1 installer CD.

It will go as far as the same error message and then will give me the
same options (none good) and I am stuck in a loop. An outline of my
experience is in a Thursday's "New Users" MFIF recent post. Any other
ideas, outside of those options I know? -Thanks, and happy computing!

On my Mac which has had MANY versions of iTunes, there were three iTunes*.plist files in the /Library/Receipts folder. I deleted the two old ones and kept iTunesX.plist. After that, Disk Util didn't crash. There is some risk to the permissions not fully being corrected if more than one receipt is required to fully fix them for iTunes. I thought the risk was worth it.

disk utility works fine BUT iTunes is FUBAR...upon trying to play anything w/ it
the app crashes...tried all recommendations from cleaning caches to reapplying
the combo updater to no avail...interesting that its been pulled (hopefully there
will be more info soon) Anyone else out there w/ the same problem?

The fix suggested by pecosbill solved the issue
in my iBookG3's system; I had the system move
the two older Recipts from earlier iTunes versions
    into the Trash, then after a restart, emptied it;
then ran repair disk permissions from Disk Utility
and later ran the full Automation schedule under
OnyX (for OSX 10.3.9.) -- Now, on to bigger fish!

Thankyou. Saved me from using a clone to re-
install entire drive backup of earlier pre-update
system plus contents from Firewire LaCie!

As another victim of this problem, I too have corrected it by dumping iTunes
6.0.2, the pref file and all iTunes pkg files in Receipts. I then re-installed the
previous version from my back-up partition.<p>
Prior to finding this thread I ran Disk Warrior which performed OK but did
    nothing to solve the problem.<p>
I also searched the Apple knowledge base - nothing - so I e-mailed Apple,
suggesting they put something on the site, and asking if they had any advice.
This is their breath-takingly arrogant response:<p>
<i>"Thank you for writing to us. We feel that Mac users are so superior we
would be ill advised to tell them what to do,<p>
"We do welcome all responses to the site and hope you will write again
should you have any further thoughts about the way we do things,<p>
    "My best wishes,<p>
    Mark Law"</i><p><p>

I was able to fix the permissions problem by applying the 10.3.9 combo
updater. I took a look at the problems associated with the update; it appears to
run in alot of directions. By applying the update I felt that if it worked it would
fill in the gaps. It worked well resolving the issues.

Apple told me to move "iTunes.pkg" and "iTunes4,pkg" from Library&gt;Recipts,
to the desk top .. then run disk utility. That works, but you have to put them
    back after.
