iTunes 6.0.2 (#3): More on Disk Utility's inability to complete repairs; Smart playlist bug; more

by CNET staff

More on Disk Utility's inability to complete repairs We previously reported on an inability to properly run Disk Utility after applying the iTunes 6.0.2 update, receiving the error message:

"Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."

part-way through the repair process.

The problem generally affects users running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

We previously noted two potential workarounds for this issue:

  • Delete the "Chess" application and its associated .plist file (com.apple.Chess.plist, located in ~/Library/Preferences -- the Library folder inside your user directory) and attempt to re-run Disk Utility
  • Delete iTunes 6.0.2 and its associated .plist file (com.apple.iTunes.plist, located in ~/Library/Preferences). Re-install iTunes 6.0.1 (from a backup, if available) and attempt to run Disk Utility again.

Now several users report that you can simply drag the iTunes 6.0.2 application out of the /Applications folder temporarily while you repair permissions.

MacFixIt reader Ian Waterston writes:

"This issue whereby iTunes 6.02 messes up Disk Utility for Panther (and earlier system?) seems to have a 'Quick and Easy Fix'. Just drag ITunes 6.02 from the Application folder and onto the Desktop, then run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. It will run perfectly. Then return iTunes back to the Application Folder. You'll have to do this whenever you want to Repair Permissions. I guess we just wait for Apple to make a permanent fix."

Smart playlist bug MacFixIt reader Charles Bailey reports a new bug with smart playlists which we have verified in-house.

The bug disallows proper selection of a star rating as a criterion from a Smart Playlist. Three starts cannot be selected as an option, and clicking on other star ratings has erratic results.

Charles writes:

"I've confirmed there appears to be a bug in iTunes 6.0.2 relating to making smart playlists. If one attempts to make a smart playlist and set the 'my rating' as a criteria, you cannot set three stars. In fact, where you click has nothing to do with the selected rating ? clicking on one star gets you two; two stars gets you four; three, four or five stars gets you five. I?ve tested this out on two Macs running Mac OS X 10.4 (one running 10.4.3 and the other 10.4.4). I also tested it out on a Windows XP SP2 station ? the Macs exhibit the problem, but the PC does not, so it's limited only to the Mac version of iTunes 6.0.2."

AirTunes and multiple speaker sets Kee Hinckley notes some issues with the newly added ability to stream to multiple speaker sets through AirTunes.

Kee writes:

"The fact that multiple Airport Express units and the computer keep synchronized is great. However if you send to more than one Airport, the volume control is disabled. And if you send to an Airport and the local machine, the volume control only controls the local machine's iTunes volume. There appears to be no way to change the remote volume if you are sending to more than one Airport or to an Airport and the local computer. Nor does Mute work on the remote connections. This seems rather odd, and certainly annoying."

Re-installing iTunes 6.0.1 If you are considering reverting to iTunes 6.0.1, note that you will need to delete the following files in order for the installation to proceed properly:

  • The iTunes 6.0.2 application (located in /Applications)
  • com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
  • iTunes.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)

You should then be able to properly use the iTunes 6.0.1 (or 6.0) installer.

Freezes, other problems when synching with iPod Some users are reporting issues with freezing during iPod synchronization.

Joe Cardella writes:

"Immediately after installing 6.0.2, my ipod repeatedly freezes while syncing to iTunes and displays the 'Exclamation Folder'. I've attempted numerous restores using ipod software update 2006-1-10, which gives me a normal looking iPod, until I try syncing again."

Other users are reporting problems with duplicate songs, or purportedly synchronized tracks not actually making it on to the iPod.

In some cases, these issues can be resolved via the following process:

  1. Create a new user (using the button in the Accounts pane of System Preferences), then login in as that user.
  2. Plug-in the iPod.
  3. When prompted break the Library connection with the old account (set the iPod to use the new Library). This will delete all songs from your iPod.
  4. Next, switch back to the old account and re-attempt synchronization, again switching the Library binding.

Issues with MIDI files A few readers are reporting issues with MIDI files in iTunes 6.0.2.

One reader writes:

"They are identified as QuickTime Movie Files but when one tries to rename them, the name defaults to 'untitled' and there appears to be no way to change it to anything else. Not sure why, but on someone else's computer, there are also a couple that got changed to 'User Song' (I think that is the wording). I understand that in some cases, the name can be changed just by clicking on the song to play it.

"There is no clue as to the original song title other than looking at the file name and I suspect that can also change to 'untitled' in some cases."

<b>I think it's fair to say that we can put the iTunes 6.0.2 release in the
"what the hell was Apple thinking?!" file. What a disaster! Ya, know... Apple...

I ran the App Chache OUT X and then put the chess app in the trash and disk
utility ran just fine. Very strange. At first I could not even run it from the
install CD. I could run DFA but not repair permissions.

These problems with 6.0.2 have me especially concerned since ITMS will no
longer allow me to purchase anything unless I upgrade to at least iTunes
v6.0! I've been happily using iTunes 4.9 under OS 10.3.7 on my MDD G4 at
home with no problems. Now I apparently must not only move to v6.0, but
must D/L 6.0.2, and face a new round of Apple software problems.

Darg iTunes to the Desktop, and run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Drag
iTunes back to Application folder. Go to Library/Receipts and delete,
iTunesX.pkg and iTunes.pkg. Leave this receipt iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Now you
will be able to run Disk Utility without havimg to drag iTunes to the Desktop
    each time.

I have run permissions repair with 10.4.4 and iTunes 6.0.2 without any
problems whatsoever. Apparently it is not a universal problem - just with some
    machines?

Sorted. Delete from /Library/Receipts iTunes.pkg and iTunes4.pkg either
before you update, or after you update. Disk Utility will now function as
normal. See xlr8yourmac.com for original suggestion.

Yeah, bought a new EMac in 2004 and 2 months later could have gotten the
same thing with faster processor for the same price. i think i will wait for a
while after they release anything before i purchase/upgrade just to see what
works and if i can get something better for the same price. when companies
start to get big, they forget about the people who helped them get big by
    buying their products.
