iWeb 1.0 (#2): Repeated crashes -- try removing Flip4Mac

by CNET staff

Users continue to report persistent crashes from iWeb 1.0, particularly when attempting to use the media browser.

MacFixIt reader Luke writes:

"Both iWeb and Garageband crash on me extremely frequently as well. I have a Dual 2.5 G5 with 4.5 GB of RAM. I can't work for 20 minutes in iWeb without it crashing and giving me the 'reopen' dialog box.

In many cases, this issue can be resolved by uninstalling Flip4Mac -- a set of components designed to added Windows Media file compatibility to QuickTime.

Flip4Mac can be uninstalled by deleting the following files:

  • Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.webplugin
  • Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
  • Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
  • Macintosh HD/Library/PreferencePanes/WmvPlayer.prefPanel
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/Flip4Mac WMV Import Installer.pkg
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/Flip4Mac WMV Export Installer.pkg

Flip4Mac also comes with an uninstaller, located in its application folder:

    "/Applications/Flip4Mac/Flip4Mac\ WMV\ Uninstaller.pkg"

I had this problem, saw this suggested solution - indeed had Flip4Mac installed
    - uninstalled it (using their uninstall program) - reran iWeb and problem still
existed - verified all the files listed had indeed been deleted - restarted my
PowerBook and ran iWeb - it still stalls into oblivion (iWeb hangs and can only be
    force quit)

so?this solution didn't work, in my case?

FLip4Mac should not cause problems like this. Countless users are finding full
comptibility and great results with it. If you have a specific problem, your first
action should be to check http://www.flip4mac.com/fusetalk/forum/ There
you can usually find solutions to issues. If you still can't solve your problem,
    then you go here: http://www.flip4mac.com/faqs_wmv.htm

You may even want to talk to Telestream's tech support and can easily do that
as well. I just think it's misinformation to tell people to uninstall Flip4Mac
when the realy problem is some other aspect of how your Mac is set up.

It's worth checking into by directly communicating with Flip4Mac support..the
plugin is a great advancement to using WMP.

Not that I access Windows media files that often, but since Microsoft has
announced it is dropping development of Windows Media Player for the Mac
and is now referring people who need that functionality to Flip4Mac, one
could hope that whoever is responsible for the incompatibility between iWeb
and Flip4Mac will get it sorted out soon. Who knows what other problems
    may arise from that issue?

Indeed, since Microsoft and Apple have announced a new five year
agreement, it seems reasonable for Apple (with Microsoft?s cooperation) to
finally include Windows media support in QuickTime, both on the Mac
and on Windows PCs. While that might not seem to jibe with Microsoft?s
monopolistic inclinations, it would serve the interests of users, on whose
behalf Microsoft so often claims to be working. It?s past time they do more
    than just talk the talk.
