iTunes 6.0.2 (#5): Another fix for Disk Utility errors; Continuously asking for proxy password; more

by CNET staff

Another fix for Disk Utility errors We continue coverage of an inability to properly run Disk Utility after applying the iTunes 6.0.2 update, receiving the error message:

"Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."

part-way through the repair process.

The problem generally affects users running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Three workarounds have already been noted, and now MacFixIt reader Ian Waterson offers a less invasive procedure: deleting all .pkg files with iTunes in their name from /Library/Receipts expect for for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg.

It also appears that stripping the iTunes 6.0.2 Universal Binary of Intel-specific code eliminates this issue, though this procedure is not recommended.

Continuously asking for proxy password Some users report that iTunes 6.0.2 continuously asks for a proxy password when accessing the iTunes Music Store, neglecting to remember the password each time.

MacFixIt reader Steve writes:

"When trying to use the Mac version of iTunes behind the proxy server at my job, it repeatedly (and I mean repeatedly) asks me to log-in to the proxy. Even when "Remember Password" is turned on, the password must be entered sometimes 100 times just to load one page in the music store. With the Windows version behind the same proxy, this does not happen.

"I've discovered that iTunes literally *deletes* the key in my keychain for the proxy server when I try to connect to the music store. Every time I type my password in each dialog box, the key gets reestablished for a second and then is deleted again when the dialog reappears. I've watched this happen before my eyes with Keychain Access open. What in the world could cause any program to completely delete a key in my keychain?"

AirPort Express streaming dropouts We continue to report on AirPort Express signal dropouts that seem to coincide with the iTunes 6.0.2 update.

MacFixIt reader Mike writes:

"Since updating to Mac OS X 10.4.4 and iTunes 6.0.2 (done the same day) my airport express drops the music signal from itunes (the sound comes and goes). iTunes works well when playing music to earphones connected to my computer but not on my speakers connected to my airport express. This is not a wireless problem since my AirPort Express is wired to my Mac."

I had the same problem with Disk Utility on an iMac running 10.3.9. I booted
from the system CD and still could not repair permissions. I decided to archive
and reinstall. This worked. Took 2 hours, but it worked. After the re-install Disk
    Utility ran fine.

Deleting the .pkg files worked fine. I just left iTunesX.pkg and the phone driver.

We're having the same proxy problems with iTunes 6.0.2 where it constantly asks for username/password. We are behind an ISA server (microsoft) for proxy requests. If a solution is found I will post.

I updated to iTunes 6.0.3 hoping that I would then be able to repair
permissions using disc utility. Only when I followed your advice and deleted
the .pkg files as you suggested could I repair permissions. I am amazed and
extremely gratified that you could figure it out! Thanks a million.
