AAC encoding issues: Muffled sound

by CNET staff

MacFixIt reader Jorge Padilla reports a problem with AAC audio quality that we have not experienced in house, and for which we are seeking confirmation:

"This is a bug I?m experiencing specifically with one song; sadly, it?s a classic song: Jump by Van Halen. I have this song on 2 albums I bought: Van Halen Best of Volume I and the new compilation Van Halen Best of Both Worlds.

"Basically what happens is that when I encode that specific song with AAC (I tried only 128 and 160 bits) the beginning of the song sounds muffled (when the opening synth starts, arguably, one of the key moments of the song) but after fractions of a second it carries on perfectly. The odd part is I already had the song encoded in old version of the software (iTunes 4.0 and QuickTime 6.0.2) and sounded perfectly, and I wanted to reencode it because its one of my favorite songs and because the new QuickTime 6.5.1 sound so much better to me. This problem affects the same song in both albums. And also, this does NOT happen if I use Apple Lossless Encoding, AIFF or WAV (havenīt tried mp3 nor want to really).

"I tried this in my iBook G3 800MHZ 12? OS X 10.3.4 iTunes 4.6, Quicktime 6.5.1 640 MB ram. And my family?s eMac 700 MHZ, same os and software and in both computers happens."

We just updated the official german mirror and already have a comment on
    that problem:

    A reader (Padimac) told us:
"I just ripped "Jump" from the newest album from Van Halen in AAC (128kbit)
and it plays perfectly! I've got an iMac 17" 1.25 Ghz, Quicktime 6.5.1 and
    iTunes 4.6"

No problems here. I ripped 'Jump' from "The Best of Both Worlds" in both
Apple Lossless, and AAC 160kb/s. I do not hear any difference between these
new rips, and the ones already in my library, from "1984" and "Best of Volume
1". However, I am not using reference speakers or headphones, but I still do
    not hear a difference.

An easily overlooked way to avoid this problem, such as it is, is to avoid Van Halen's Jump. Maybe iTunes has a 'stifle gruesome eighties hits' filter as an invisible plist preference?

Ok, firstly sorry for all the grammar and semantic errors.

But I stand with what I said. Van Halen's song Jump starts muffled. Just the
first fraction of a second, that's it. The rest of the song sounds perfect.

Maybe its difficult to hear, you need to have the track in both a Lossless
format (ALE, AIFF or WAV) and AAC and listen to one then the other to catch
the difference. It's there, I'm hearing it right now. Maybe its subtle to you, but
    to me is very obvious.

Maybe the problem is that one of my hobbies is video sound editing so
maybe only I can hear this problem... But I don't think so.

    Hope this helps.
