Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.5; Upgrade procedure
Apple has released Mac OS X 10.3.5 through Software Update. According to accompanying documentation, key enhancements in the new release include:
- improved support for NTFS formatted volumes
- improves reliability for user logins and mounting of home directories in a networked environment
- updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- improved Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and Bluetooth phones
- additional FireWire and USB device compatibility
- improved font management
- updated Mail and Image Capture applications
- improved compatibility for third party applications
- previous standalone security updates
Apple has also specified a Knowledge Base article link for the update:
As usual, we recommend the following procedure when applying a system Update:
- Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
- When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function.
- Install the update.
- After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.
We've found that using this update procedure avoids many of the common problems reported by readers after each update to OS X.
If you've applied the update and are having any problems -- or had a trouble-free installation -- please drop us a line at late-breakers@macfixit.com.

psr
Not only that, the animated radar maps on weather.com now actually work.
They didn't before, it would just say "Animation Loading". Nice job.
Well actually, Weather.com's Map in Motion now works in 10.3.4 too. I
haven't upgraded yet and the map is working quite well for me. Must be
something done at server end.
Psr, in what way(s) has font handling been improved? The Apple
documentation is vague, to say the least. If you see improvement I'd
appreciate some specifics. Thanks.

Don't anthropomorphize computers.
They hate that.
Oh yes, the font handling. I just upgraded, restarted, and ALL system fonts have disappeared. No file names or any text appears in the finder, except the clock in the upper right corner of the main menu.
finished moving info from my old Powerbook via the migration feature, and
then went to check Software Upgrade. There was 10.3.5.
Just finshed upgrading via Software Update, everything looks good. One thing
I noticed is that when I went to repair permissons that was one of the new
changes. Permissions repaired, everything is running OK so far.
" I had just walked into the house with a new G4 15' Powerbook, had
finished moving info from my old Powerbook via the migration feature"
I thought this migration feature was only for G5 Desktops...does it work for
PowerBooks, too?
I thought that also, but it was there when I powered up the G4 today. I just
connected the firewire cable and followed indtructions, it worked perfectly.
Thanks, Larry
When you install a clean copy of panther and run software update, it will
automatically grab the combo version of the 10.3.5 updater, even if the web
version hasn't yet been posted.
iBook G4 800MHz 12" 640 MB RAM
Temperature Monitor posts a long winded error message that the
combination of hardware and software cannot be supported.
ThermoInDock reports 30F.
I can confirm this. However the temperature that Menu Meters used to report
for the PPC 7400 chip seemed to me too low anyway (around 25 degree
Celsius)...
Temperature Monitor no longer works on my PowerBook G3 (Pismo) after the 10.3.5 update. I get an error message to the effect that the application cannot find an appropriate sensor. That might be true but, under 10.3.4, that didn't seem to stop it from being able to calculate an approximate CPU temperature.
Repaired permissions beforehand; repaired disk from Panther install CD;
repaired permissions again afterwards. Took less than 20 minutes and
everything's working very well. Thanks Apple!
because of problems with that application. I don't want to upgrade unless it is
going to work.
This update runs well on my G3 350. Only one very minor issue was that after the instalation and restart the display was reset to 800 x 600 and the screen was distorted. I had to go to the display preferences panel in system preferences reset the monitor setting. I guess this resulted because the upgrade installed a new driver for the ATI Rage 128 video card.
So far the operating system "seems" snappier, and more responsive as if the operating system has been given a speed boost. Thanks Apple.
By the way take the time to run "repair permissions". Several of the newly upgraded items needed their permissions repaired. This precaution will likely be a bother now, but may prevent a boatload of grief down the road.
The Finder continuously restarts, even when logged-in in "Safe" mode and
with a clean Admin account I keep for just such an emergency. Repairing
permissions didn't do anything for me... Of course, this all happens after
APL-CARE has closed up shop for the evening.
If I have to archive and install, I may cry.
longer need to use Camino or IE.
