Solutions for Entourage 2004 converting text to TNEF files

We previously reported a problem where Entourage 2004 converts attachments sent through an Exchange server to TNEF files.

E-mails sent internally using an Exchange 5.5 mail server are, in most cases, converted to TNEFs in Entourage 2004. One solution appears to be upgrading to a more current version of Exchange server, Exchange 2003.

We've since identified two additional workarounds for this issue:

  • The shareware application TNEF's Enough will decode the TNEF file, though sometimes it may be blank.
  • MacFixIt reader Sally Shears writes "Whether the TNEF file is sent to a recipient depends on the entry for that email address in the Exchange database. See this page for Microsoft's own explanation for how to eliminate the problem for a given recipient.
