iMac G5: Unpacking hiccups

by CNET staff

It appears that some iMac G5s coming off the assembly have a few minor mechanical flaws.

MacFixIt reader Dan B writes:

"When you receive your iMac G5, you might want to open it up and inspect it carefully before firing it up. I just unboxed my 20" iMac and found the following:

  • Back bezel not attached properly. They failed to insert the top tabs into the slots before screwing on the back, which resulted in an actual gap running right across the top of the computer. Removing and reattaching the back correctly remedied the problem.
  • All four screws which fasten the optical drive in place were missing. Thus, the optical drive was just "floating" in its bay. Had I used it, there's a pretty good chance that a CD/DVD jam would have resulted at some point, as the position of the drive changed in relation to the slot. Rather than return the unit, I'll just go pick up some appropriate machine screws at the hardware store.
