StuffIt Deluxe 10.0: Incorrect unstuff times; other issues
We've received our first reports of issues with StuffIt Deluxe (including StuffIt Expander) 10.0, released yesterday.
Incorrect unstuff times MacFixIt reader Randy Smith reports that the new release is incorrectly reporting estimated unstuff times.
Randy writes:
"StuffIt Deluxe 10 is incorrectly reporting unstuff times. A file which should take about 20 minutes to unstuff is reporting 2023406814 hours to go before it is finished, I don't think I can wait that long. The file will unstuff in about 20 minutes despite what the display says."
Problems launching Meanwhile, Peter Gergely reports problems launching both StuffIt Deluxe and StuffIt Expander since the update.
Peter writes:
"I have done two installs on Mac OS X 10.4.2 systems. One on a G4/450 that was upgraded, and the other on a Dual G5/2Ghz that was done with archive and install. Both machines have Stuffit Deluxe 9.02 running perfectly.
"After the install of StuffIt Deluxe 10.0, the menu extras work fine, but trying to launch either Stuffit Deluxe or Stuffit Expander causes the application to crash immediately. Reboots, cache cleans, preference removals, de-installs of the whole product, and a reinstall seem to make no difference on both of my machines."

worst install I have ever encountered with any application. What a waste of
money and time. I actually did 3 clean installs and uninstalls, the cache cleaning,
the preference cleaning, and more. The console log is useless as well (under
crash reporter for Stuffit). Any ideas from the more experienced users out there?
Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a thread on the Stuffit forum describing this problem at:

Apparently the apps will crash on start-up whilst trying to check for new
versions if IPv6 is disabled under System Preferences:Network.
Configuring IPv6 to "Automatic" resolves the issue.

The solution was to turn IPv6 to "Automatic" in the TCP/IP pane of the network
preferences window. SIT 1- worked great after that.
Unbelieavable!!!!
Sure enough, I didn't have IPV6 set to automatic. In fact, I had it OFF since I don't use it.
Well, folks, turning IPV6 to automatically in the Network Preference Pane worked. Both applications that I reported via late breakers now work fine.
So weird!

It's because the apps check for updates when they launch - obviously they do
something the kernel doesn't like if IPv6 is off.
So why does Stuffit want to have anything to do with the network? What kind
of communication does Allume expect to initiate?
I found that this fixed my issue as well. However, once you have successfully
launched Expander turn off the Allow Version Checking option in the Stuffit
Expander menu. Once this is off you can turn IPv6 off again and it will launch
without issue. You could also probably just edit the com.stuffit.expander.plist
without ever turning IPv6 on.
I seem to recall they had a similar issue with the first release of 9.0. Version
checking was on by default and when launching without a network connection it
would hang trying to connect to their servers.
Seems like they would learn from their previous mistakes.

- Indeed this is a terrible release, and should not have been done. Although the

(8 Comments)subsequent fix, 24 h later, solves SOME but not all of the issues, 10.0 should
not have been released in the first place. Had I read the comments I would not
have wasted my $$$ buying the upgrade. I would advise users not to bother
with this, at least not for a few months: the opportunity cost of the wasted time
was far greater than the upgrade cost.
