Lower RAM slot in some PowerBook G4 Aluminum fails

by CNET staff

Several readers are beginning to experience an issue where the lower RAM slot in the PowerBook G4 Aluminum fails. Despite switching modules and performing a variety of maintenance procedures, many users are unable to persuade memory located in the slot to be recognized.

MacFixIt reader Wieland writes:

"My powerbook has a strange problem. The RAM in the lower Powerbook 1.25 GHz slot is dead. I changed the RAM only to discover that not the RAM but the slot is dead. So instead of having my 1 GB of RAM ( 2 x 512 MB) I bought and had for a few months, I have now only 512 MB. And so is my Powerbook behaving now."

A number of posters on Apple's Discussion boards confirm the problem, and most report a quick turnaround on repair.

Poster Jose Ramirez wrote "Add me to the list of the people that lost half the Ram. I have apple care so I called them up. Shipped my computer on Monday night (kept using it all day with half the RAM) and got it back today Wednesday morning. I really don't like things breaking on my powerbook, but getting things fixed with just one day of downtime is pretty good service. Bad apple for making flimsy mother boards ... Good apple for the level of service."

Received a brand new PB 1.5GHz last week with this issue right out of the
box. No startup chime led me to look to the RAM for problems and sure
enough, no RAM was being seen in the lower slot. My retailer was more than
happy to exchange the unit since it was brand new.

I had the exact same issue and after Apple replaced both 512 MB chips and it still didn't work. The local apple store was able to get a new logic board for my system. Thank goodness for AppleCare, or my repair would have been over $1000.00
