iCal 1.5.5: Problems with installation

by CNET staff

Several readers note problems installing the latest update to Apple's iCal, version 1.5.5. In most cases, users receive the message that iCal is already running and must be quit before the update process can take place -- though iCal is not active at the time.

Others report a message stating simply "iCal cannot be installed on this computer."

MacFixIt reader James Hoyhtya writes:

"I am unable to install iCal 1.5.5. I am trying to update my current iCal 1.5.4. I am running OS X 10.3.6. This message come up when trying to install iCal 1.5.5. iCal 1.5.5 cannot be installed on this computer."

Workarounds

Some have been able to resolve this problem by checking the option "Turn off alarms when iCal is not open" in the Preferences pane of iCal.

Also, note that if you are running the shareware application "MenuCalendarClock" (an iCal compatible menu calendar), it will prevent the update from running. It must be quit before attempting the update. Other iCal add-ons may have a similar effect, though we haven't received any reports thus far.

Meanwhile, Robert Bruce reports a separate installation issue:

"I had a strange problem installing iCal 1.5.5 from the Software Update using the download only setting, it would download but then hang when it tried to expand with this error message (The update "iCal" could not be verified and expanded correctly. Make sure you have permission to write to /Library/Packages, then try again.) The settings for this folder were correct. I disabled the proxy sever setting on the Mac that was attempting to download iCal and then it successfully downloaded and installed without a problem. Just to check if this was a new feature in Software Update I turned the proxy server settings back on and tried downloading and installing the iSync 1.5 update, it worked with no problems. I don't know if this was a isolated incident or a new feature that is going to be implemented in future updates. I suspect that Software Update was trying to talk back to Apples servers for some reason. We have had problems before connecting to any secure web sites (those using https://) going thru the proxy server and to make them work have had to bypass the proxy server."

I had the iCal quit error. After a while I remembered that
MenuCalendarClock was running and it has links to iCal. when I
    quit MenuCalendarClock, iCal installed normally.
