New and Noteworthy: Switching to Mac isn't for everyone; More Apple phone speculation; Mac mini a good investment; Stock split

by CNET staff

Switching to Mac isn't for everyone The Wall Street Journal's Walter Mossberg notes that although switching to the Mac is great for security, it isn't for everyone, and then lists some of the people for whom such a switch might not be prudent: "The bottom line is that the Mac is a great alternative for mainstream consumers doing mainstream tasks who are sick and tired of the Windows security crisis. But it isn't for everybody." More.

Another prediction of an Apple phone An eWeek article further fuels speculation about an Apple-branded mobile phone, noting Nokia's recent deal with Microsoft to embed Windows Media Player in future phones: "If Nokia really wanted to go for market share in music, surely the company would interface with what Apple has to offer? No doubt, Nokia tried and Apple nixed the idea. But, why would Apple say no to a partnership with the world's largest cell phone maker? Cupertino must have plans of its own." More.

Mac mini: a worthwhile investment Computer tech site Tom's Hardware gives the Mac mini a very favorable review: "Compared to the well-known SFF PCs, Apple's Mac mini stands out with its exceptional design. The choice of color, form and materials literally puts the mini into a class of its own. The high build quality and overall charm are also points in its favor, especially compared to other SFF PCs. Its very compact dimensions, its near-silent operation and the low power draw of roughly 20 W make its rivals from the Windows world look like amateurs." More.

What does Apple's stock split mean? A Macworld article discusses Apple's upcoming stock split and its implications: "But what exactly does it mean when a company splits its stock? And what?s the benefit? The answer to that latter depends on whether you?re asking from the perspective of the company, its investors, or the people who might consider snapping up some of those newly priced shares." More.
