Most users have reported a problem-free update to Security revision 2005-003 when using our recommended upgrade procedure:

  • Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
  • When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function. Install the update.
  • After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.

However, a a few issues have appeared.

Problems with new version of Cyrus in Mac OS X Server MacFixIt reader Ron McElfresh reports that Apple's revision to the Cyrus mail server component of Mac OS X server has caused some IMAP/POP difficulties, including:

  • Server Admin can no longer read or list email accounts in the Accounts tab
  • APOP no longer works (only with "Clear")
  • IMAP no longer works (only with "Clear")
  • Server Admin "breaks" custom changes to Postix "main.cf" config file.

Printer sharing David Ourisman reports some printer sharing problems after applying the update:

"I installed the Security Update on my G5 PowerMac. This seems to have broken the ability of my G5 to share a Brother laser printer attached via USB with an iBook on my AppleTalk network."

Palm HotSync A component that seems to break with various Mac OS X updates -- Palm's HotSync mechanism -- is once again hampered by Security Update 2005-003. MacFixIt reader Paul writes:

"I had an immediate problem after using Software Update to install latest security update - Palm Desktop's Hotsync failed. In the end I think the problem was with the Transports. Either they need reinstalling or just turning back on from Hotsync/setup/connection settings. This needs testing as I messed around with a heap of things before getting the transports back running but if others have a problem then look in that area."

If you are having issues similar to any of the above reports, please let us know.

No problems with this update. I ran Disk Warrior and repaired permissions
before and after applying the update.

After installing SU2005-003, I am unable to print from Win2k to a
Brother 6050DN shared off of my G4-400. Repaired permissions using Disk
Utility - it changed permissions on some SAMBA files (making them more
    restrictive):

Permissions differ on ./private/var/spool/samba, should be drwxr-
    xr-x , they are drwxrwxrwx
Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/spool/samba
    Permissions corrected on ./private/var/spool/samba

Also, can't log into CUPS web admin, either with root or the admin user.

I found a solution to this problem, although the root cause is still unknown:

I re-installed the latest Brother printer drivers for the HL6050DN, then
deleted the printer and re-added it in the Printer Setup utility. Because I
changed the printer name, I also deleted and re-added the printer on the
    Win2k machines.

Repaired Permisions and disk before and after installing update from
    Software Update.

Can't send, reply, or forward mail. Ball spins for 5 minutes or more before
new mail begins to load or previouse mail that is highlighted shows up in
    the message area.

Ran Diskwarrior and permissions and repair again. No help.

Used Macjanitor, repeated permissions and disk repair. Still no help.

Also, problems in writing this message in safari.

    What to do next?
I use a printer and have a cable modem. Should I have
gone to the website and done a combined update there. Would 10.3.8 server
    be part of my OS?

I have a G4/500 (which is really based on the G3's), OS 10.3.8

I also have a problem following the latest security update - MacOS X server, as reported, no longer reports mail accounts in Server Admin. In addition, some of the mail accounts have just stopped working - mail sent to these addresses just gets bounced back with an error message saying mailbox does not exist. It certainly did before the update, and according to Workgroup Manager it still should...

Follow-up on my previous post - running Fix Permissions resulted in a VAST number of permissions being fixed, but this did not correct the problem with Server Admin not showing accounts.

I have also narrowed down the further problem with some mailboxes not working - basically it appears as if any email address with a two part name before the @ sign (eg john.doe@domain.com) does not work any more, whereas a single part before the @ sign (eg john@domain.com) does still work. Most of my users are set up with aliases allowing both forms, but obviously it is very annoying for some email addresses to just stop working after an update like this. Apple need to get on this one very quickly...

    Paul said,

"I had an immediate problem after using Software Update to install latest security update - Palm Desktop's Hotsync failed."

I did the usual thing with permission checking before and after the update with no Palm problems. I use Palm Sync multiple times per day with Docs to Go, address book and calendar. No problems, nadda with the Security Update -- thus far.

No problems so far. I was able to HotSync without any problems both before and after the update. Apple iSync conduit is installed. Palm Desktop 4.2.1, PowerMac G3 Yosemite, Tungsten E.

    Why not just run AppleJack?
