Lexmark printer compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3.x: Included drivers may not work

Yesterday we reported on issues with Lexmark printers under various iterations of Mac OS X 10.3.x.

We continue to receive reports of both problems printing, and system instability when attempting to print.

MacFixIt reader Greg Clark writes:

"My wife has a Lexmark X73. If the Lexmark Print Monitor is running, the entire computer freezes. If we Force Quit the monitor the computer is fine. No more Lexmarks for us."

Meanwhile, it appears that in some cases the Lexmark driver included in-box on CD will not provide printing capability, while drivers available from the Lexmark Web site will.

MacFixIt reader Nancy Rausch writes:

"I couldn't get my Lexmark X83 to work with my new iMac G5 (Mac OS X 10.3.x) using the driver on the CD. I went to Lexmark driver site and downloaded the driver for Mac OS X 10.2 and the firmware updates they have. The printer works great now."

I got an X73 model free from a friend, and got the drivers from their web-site (although I went through versiontracker, because i wasn't sure their site listed the latest ones). The comments on VT reported that the monitor program chews up CPU time. I noticed that too, at first, but for some reason it's gone down to 2% at most.

The software used for scanning and printing is passable, but clunky, the scanner isn't seen by OS X's Image Capture app, and figuring out how to get it to print a test page was an exercise in futility.

But it was free, so how can I complain?

Yesterday, I mistakenly said that my friends X83 did work on his new iMac with version 10.3.8.

I was wrong. I downloaded the latest X83 driver from Lexmark and YES, the printer did work. But, his iMac came with v.10.3.6.

When he upgraded to 10.3.8 the printer no longer worked. So, he reverted back to 10.3.6 in hopes that Lexmark will make a new driver.
