Mac mini: Repeatable freeze under certain conditions?; Developer note

by CNET staff

Michael Diehr reports a repeatable freeze that occurs when running his Mac mini headless (without a monitor) and while energy saver settings are active for which we are seeking confirmation.

Michael writes:

"I just bought a Mac Mini and am very happy with it, except I keep getting complete lockups from time to time. I think I've narrowed it down to the following combination of items:

  • Mini is running w/o attached monitor
  • Apple Remote Desktop
  • Energy Saver, Screen Saver, or Sleep is active

If you are experiencing a similar problem, please let us know.

Mac mini Developer note Apple has now posted a Mac mini developer note, in both HTML and PDF versions.

I had the freeze problem with the Mini too. Idecided to uncheck the sleep option on the hard drive and the problem has not happened since. I remember reading about this issue for Powerbooks also. There too, once the hard disk sleep is disabled, the problem vanished.

BTW, the link to report (with a mailto) is not working.

    Hello!...
    Wake up...
If I'm hearing right the issue described happens when you disconnect the
monitor cable. When the mac wakes from that deep sleep, it's pretty much as
if you booted the system with no monitor cable in the first place. G4 systems
that I've seen won't show any video if you boot them without a monitor
attached (or at least ones with ATI graphics).
Here's my suggested fix: Don't unhook the monitor cable.

At first I also thought that this guy must be smokin' something bad, but on
second thought, perhaps he's running a bunch of headless minis as servers.
You certainly don't need a monitor for every server. Thus it is a very real
    issue.

Well I have just bought my Mini and having the same experience here. It's my
first mac so btw the change around my linux box and the mini sometimes I
did plug my huge flat screen on it while still is up and it couldn't get signal.
So if I unplugged the plug from the Mini, I put it in the linux box, goes well,
but if I put the plug back in the Min, iti goes away ;(

I have been having the same exact problem with my mini freezing while
running as a headless music server. Have been able to duplucate the problem
almost every time the computer is used.

Have set screensaver activation, and sleep to NEVER. Have unchecked put
hard drive to sleep when possible.

The mini so far has been running (and serving music) continuously for two
    days without the problem reoccurring.
