Apple has posted Mac OS X 10.3.9 and Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 to Software Update, and as a series of standalone Web downloads:

Mac OS X 10.3.9 Client provides the following enhancements:

  • file sharing and directory services reliability for mixed Mac and PC networks
  • Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability
  • compatibility for third party applications and devices
  • previous standalone security updates

Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 provides the following enhancements:

  • reliability of Open Directory authentication requests, and Active Directory integration
  • AFP performance when listing large files and directories
  • update to Cyrus version 2.2.10 for more reliable email message storage
  • reliability of Ethernet communications on Xserve
  • compatibility for third party applications and devices
  • previous standalone security updates

As usual, we recommend the following procedure when applying a system update:

  • Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
  • When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function.
  • Install the update.
  • After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.

If you are having any problems with Mac OS X 10.3.9, please let us know.

After installing the update I'm no longer able to use Eclipse and other java based apps! If I type "java" on a shell I get "Segmentation Fault". Oh... my... God! What's up???

After installing teh update, WITH all of the usual precautions/procedures,
Safari ALWAYS crashes when trying to load a Java Applet.

Oh good, so it's just not me. Installed the update on my 17" iMac G5, Safari
quits when trying to load a Java applet.

Cannot run Safari. Immediate "unexpectedly Quits" upon launch.

Java kills Safari for me every time since 10.3.9. Everything else seems fine.
Turned Java off in preferences, then Safari works fine.

    Repaired permissions.
Update took 15 1/2 minutes counting the restart.

    Things look Ok so far.

That last 10 percent of optimizing is nerve wracking.

safari crashes immediately; a copy of safari preupdate works fine.
    Taking out acidsearch bundle in
    Library>application support>SIMBL>plugins>AcidSearch.bundle
resolves the issue; got tip from xlr8yourmac.com

After dumping AcidSearch.bundle, do you have to re-run the 10.3.9 updater
(or the combo) to regain the updated Safari app? Doesn't look like it's up yet
    as a standalone.

After applying 10.3.9, Safari 1.3 (v312) crashes immediately upon launch.
Removing AcidSearch bundle in Library->application support->SIMBL-
    >plugins->AcidSearch.bundle solves the problem.

    0. Removed PithHelmet from /Library/Application Support/SIMBL. I heard it
may cause trouble and is ineffective with 10.3.9 anyways.
    1. Launched from Install Disk, ran Disk Utility to Repair Disk.
    2. Rebooted from HD, ran DIsk Utility again, this time Repair Permissions
    3. Installed 10.3.9 Combo (took about 4-1/2 minutes on my 2x2GHz G5, 1.5
GB RAM) and it forces a restart.
    4. Ran Repair Permissions one more time.

All's well. Used Safari to go play a few hands of Texas Hold 'Em at Yahoo!
Games which is a Java applet and it worked flawlessly. If it kept dealing me
pocket aces, I would have been really happy (there's something to work on,
    Steve ;-) ).

    So far, so good.

Java programs don't work. Typing "java -version" in terminal gives a segmentation fault. Trying to reinstall Java 1.4.2 v2 doesn't work, as it doesn't recognize that the installed version of Java can be upgraded. Per a posting in the Apple forum, reinstalling security update 2003-02 fixes (or at least works around) the problem!
