Mac OS X 10.3.9: Drive/media mounting issues

by CNET staff

A number of users have reported difficulty mounting drives and removable media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.3.9.

MacFixIt reader Tony reports that manually mounting items through Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities) is successful in his case.

Tony writes:

"Ever since I installed 10.3.9, none of my volumes want to mount automatically (DVDs, Firewire HD, etc.). Usually a quick trip to Disk Utility to do a manual mount solves the problem, but it sure is annoying."

For more suggestions on resolving mounting issues in Mac OS X, see our tutorial "Ejecting media in Mac OS X: Removing 'stuck' CDs/DVDs."

In some cases, when it affects FireWire drives, this problem can be resolved by re-installing the latest firmware for your drive (check the manufacturers Web site.)

MacFixIt reader Tanja writes:

"I also encountered a problem with FireWire after updating the system to v10.3.9 (the external hard drive, a LaCie Porsche FireWire drive, does not mount any more)."

Michael Clark is one reader who had success with re-installing the latest firmware for his FireWire drive.

Michael writes:

"I was able to restore my external Firewire drive (Macally PHR-100AC) by reinstalling the Macally firmware update designed for fixing problems from earlier OSX versions. The USB interface on the PHR-100AC worked fine and the HD itself was OK, just the Macally firewire firmware was damaged."

Judging by volume of negative posts regarding 10.3.9, I'm definitely in the
minority but thought it was worth saying that installing the 10.3.9 combo has
actually fixed my disk-mounting issues! I have a G5 dual 2.5 that simply
could not recognize a blank disk--not via the desktop nor through Disk
Utility--when I was running 10.3.8. After a long discussion with Apple Care,
they had me reinstall 10.3.5. Voila-blank CDs were mounting and burning
with ease. Installed 10.3.8 again?no blank CDs. Back to 10.3.5, then up to
the 10.3.9 combo, and I can mount/burn blank CDs once again! Go figure.

    Since updating to 10.3.9.
I have been trying to get my Pioneer internal DVR-108 to work with any
media CD or DVD will not burn. But I can mount and listen to a music CD and
    iTunes ?
Using Toast 6.0, Dragon Burn 4.1.1.9, and disk Utilities burner program, I get
    errors .
Flashed the firmware 3 times and still get the same problem.
Now if the drive is bad, why wil a music CD work ?
It did work with the PatchBurn 3 program, which by the way I installed 2 more
times.Even the Latest version of PatchBurn 3.1..

Here are 2 of the error messages.

    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    WRITE ERROR
    ====================
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
    -------
What are my option now ?

the 10.3.9 combo but neither disc image will mount and run. Even
when disk utility manually mounts them they do not respond when
opened. My itunes library file got damaged and i was told to
reinstall it but this problem is preventing me from doing so and i
desperatley need my itunes! can someone please help me?
